Welcome back to school and welcome to Reader Leader! The Reader Leader program is designed to motivate and encourage students to develop a habit of regular reading. We have provided exciting incentives for those students who meet the monthly reading requirements. The minimum reading requirement varies each month depending on holidays and days off. Here is an example for September:
Monthly minimum reading requirements – by grade level
Kindergarten ~ 15 minutes a day x 13 days= 195 minutes
1st – 4th grades ~ 20 minutes a day x 13 days= 260 minutes
5th grade ~ 30 minutes a day x 13 days= 390 minutes
Each month, students will be given a calendar to record daily minutes read. A generic calendar will also be available on the PTA website.
Calendars are due to your child’s teacher on the first Friday of the following month, with a TOTAL minutes recorded and a parent’s signature. For example, September Reader Leader calendars will be due no later than the first Friday in October.
Reader Leader Rewards
Meeting the monthly grade level requirement enables students to earn the following:
- Free Book of Student’s Choice –for students meeting monthly requirements
We will be having a book giveaway in June. Students who have met the minimum reading requirements for eight months (September through April) will be able to choose one free book from hundreds of books!
- Class Books –for classes meeting monthly requirements
Each class that meets reading requirements (number of students x monthly reading requirement) will receive free books at the book giveaway.
- Class Pizza Party –for classes meeting minimum monthly reading requirements and turning in all reading logs
A class that turns in 100% of their reading logs and meets the class reading requirement every month (Sept-April) will receive a pizza party in June!
- $10 Borders Gift Certificate –for top readers in each grade
The Radical Reader Program is made possible by the Nancy LaRue Memorial Fund and is awarded to one of the top readers in each grade level. Top readers in each class will be placed in a grade level drawing and the winner will receive a $10 Borders Gift Certificate.
